The heart of this blog is documenting my own “personal branding” process.
To be recognized as an expert in the field of “Personal Branding” for Gen-X and the proper use of social media to best accomplish this.
The finish line in this process for me is twofold:
- Publish a book on this subject area.
- Be interviewed by CNN, providing expert color commentary on my area of defined expertise.
My Content Plan
Over the coming months I will be taking myself through the branding process as I understand it. Uncovering my unique attributes — my personal strengths, values and passions — using them to stand out from my competition in this niche. Thus through my personal brand clearly communicating my unique value proposition of what I have to offer.
Since Tom Peters first wrote the article “The Brand Called You” for Fast Company in August of 1997, tens of thousands of professionals have undertaken the powerful process of self understanding, position and communication that is “Personal Branding”. From what I have been reading and discovering both in books and my research over the web, the process is broken down into three steps or phases. Some people have defined these phases as discover, design and deliver, others extract, express and exude. Myself I use the terms conceive, compose and convey.
In the posts that follow, I will discover and share the tools I need to begin behaving like a brand. In the coming weeks (the month of April) I will be focusing on the Conceive Phase of the journey. Where I will be on a mission of self-discovery, where by I will define and describe what is unique about my personal brand. Then I will move on (in May) and enter the Compose Phase, where I will build my plan to increase my visibility and credibility within my niche. Finally in the Convey Phase (June onward) I will ensure that everything about me, and everything that surrounds me online sends a consistent, on-brand message about who I am and what I bring to the table.
