The past few days I have set my mission off acquiring myself an editor and have been looking into Press Kits. It seems these days everything is going Green. Direct mail is being replaced by email marketing.  Polls show that most people pay their bills online versus using the mail.  In public relations the green movement is seeing headway in changing how we do press kits.<br />

Press kits are critical to every public relations campaign.  Every client wants a press kit.  Much of the media will only consider an interview request if the company or person has a press kit.  Traditionally most press kits have been mailed out to the media often in bulk with press releases, FAQs, sales sheets, company information, biographies of key personnel all of which uses a lot of paper.  Indeed press kits have not been environmentally friendly.</p>
<p>I remember my days at Sun Microsystems working at trade shows seeing the media rooms where exhibitors would drop off hundred of press kits for the attending media to use in hopes that they will to a positive story at the show.  More often than not most of the media attending a trade show did not even pay attention to the media kits.  They had already determined who they wanted to meet.  Most of the press kits where never used and thrown away by the trade show staff when the show was over.  The amount of paper that is wasted, particularly at larger shows would have consumed the trees of a small forest.</p>
<p>Now, press kits are entering the ‘green age’.  These virtual or online press kits contain all of the information that the hard copy press kits contained.  I am contemplating how to set up my media page on my author’s website (<a href="http://paulmacp.com">http://paulmacp.com</a>).  Press kits can be displayed online and the media can download the press kits from anywhere. Indeed the media doesn’t even need to meet you as long as they are directed how to download the press kit.  The best thing about these ‘green’ or virtual press kits is that nothing goes to waste.</p>
<p>Most media now prefer online press kits that can be displayed online and emailed upon request.  Online media kits are more efficient, easy to update and maintain, and best of all eco-friendly.  Watch more and more media begin to insist that they will only accept an online press kit in the future.  Indeed in the next several years the old press kits that we are all familiar with, will have gone the way of the record player and 8 track tape deck.</p>

<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m willing to say as an editor that I MUCH prefer to receive all press / media information via email rather than by snail mail &#8211; several reasons:</p>
<ol>
<li> We work digitally, so all images are already on the computer and I don&#8217;t have to contact you for them.</li>
<li> Quicker turn around time &#8211; i find out about it in a more timely manner making it more newsworthy&#8230; and</li>
<li> A release via email sits nicely in my files on my computer (I have a billion folders in my email) and that means, since they work within the &#8220;process&#8221; i generally use, digital releases are MUCH more likely to be included.</li>

I intend to use social media to promote the book including a Facebook fan (or business page).</p>
<p>To open up some key strategic configuration options for the page, Facebook insists on 100 or more fans before these options become available to the admin.</p>
<p>In an effort to solicit fans, I made a text-to-movie video and have published it both to YouTube and <a href="http://facebook.com/paulmacp">Facebook </a>to see if it can help me in the cause.</p>
